American actress and singer, Patina Miller, was born in Pageland, South Carolina. At a young age, she was introduced to music leading her to become part of the gospel choir at their local church. Since she was young, she already had a mind set for the entertainment industry. In 2006, she graduated from South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, with a degree in Musical Theatre from Carnegie Mellon. She claims it to be a big part of her life.
“It was there that I studied and really realized that I could make my dream a reality. I’m so thankful to all my teachers who helped me to become the performer I am today. I’m so proud of my school and feel so blessed to have gotten such a wonderful education and made lifelong friends.”
Her talent in acting has brought her a lot of opportunities. In 2007, she was a cast in “All My Children”, a daytime soap opera, appearing in all 30 episodes of the show. The next year, she performed in a Central Park Production of “Hair” and was featured in the musical romantic poetry at the Manhattan Theatre Club. For the following years, she was able to stretch her connections due to various roles. To name a few, she was cast as the lead role of Delores Van Cartier in “Sister Act” which is where Patina made her Broadway Debut. It was during this role that she won a Theatre World Award, Drama League Award for Distinguished Performance and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical. On March 18 of 2012, she played her final Broadway performance and was later replaced by Raven Symone. After that, she performed as the leading player in the production of “Pippin” where she won the Outer Critics Circle Award and Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical at the 67th Tony Awards.
Due to her outstanding talent, she was given a role of Commander Paylor in the “The Hunger Games: Mocking Jay – Part 1” in 2014 as well as the Part 2 of the movie in 2015. She was also cast as Daisy Grant, press coordinator to Elizabeth McCord in the CBS Drama “Madam Secretary”.
Patina is mostly known for her Broadway performances and musical theatre acting; however, she said in an interview that she experienced a different kind of excitement and happiness when she was given a role in the Hunger Games. It was another big break for her since the movie has hit the top of the charts when it was showed. When asked if she had a special training before actually acting the part, she answered in the negative. She said she was already in her “Pippin” shape, which made it easy for her since both characters were badass.
Being a celebrity, promoting and advertising company brands become a bonus. Patina has become a brand ambassador of Michi, a utilitarian active lifestyle brand that was created in New York where the garments are constructed from silky soft, breathable, moisture wicking and durable top performing fabrics coming from both Italy and Switzerland. In one of her shoots, she wore a Michi Wildcat Bra and Michi Leggings; both of which fit her gorgeously.
This 2016, she says that she will be doing a lot of concerts and singing gigs. Also, she and her team will be pushing through with the second season of “Madam Secretary”. (Better keep watch!)
