To succeed in this world of stereotypes, deeply rooted standards, and unwillingness to look beyond the surface is in no way an easy task. Especially if you are trying to succeed as a model. People have so many opinions on how much someone is supposed to weight, what’s the perfect height, how full one’s lips should or shouldn’t be and thousands of trivial things. I don’t know how the world doesn’t get tired of being so f*cking opinionated! It’s hard to fit everybody’s standards. Other than those models who work hard to get the world’s approval, there are those who are unapologetically showing who they really are. Beauty is, after all, relative!

Let’s see some of those inspiring models who walked the road less travelled, and decided to stick to themselves no matter what the world was throwing at them!

  • Winnie Harlow

Winnie Harlow is a Canadian model, spokesperson and activist. Today, she is one of the most influential women on earth and is one of the most appreciated models who defies all standards. But things were not always that good.

Black skin has been considered as unattractive, dirty and unpleasant to look at for ages. But those were the STUPID ages. Any person is a soul, no matter the skin color. Sadly, this stereotype is still present, even though we live in the 21st century. Just imagine the hard times black models go through when they’re trying to make it in the modeling world. Despite her black skin, Winnie Harlow knew she had it in her. No bad word could take her off her goal. On top of her beautiful chocolate skin, Winnie Harlow has an autoimmune disorder of the skin which results in depigmentation of certain body parts. And it’s just what adds up to her beauty! Take that, you cruel world!

  • Ashley Graham

Every woman is in a constant duel with those few unwanted pounds. But what happens when instead of hating them, you learn to accept and love them? Then, my friends, you will become the best version of yourself. Just like Ashley Graham. Who said we all have to fit in this world where everyone should look exactly like the other one, like we came out of some kind of mold?!

Ashley Graham is inspiring women worldwide to have a positive perception of their own body, no matter their body type. Once she got in touch with her few extra (I don’t know if extra is the right word) pounds, unlimited opportunities arose. Ashley Graham is the first curvy model who appeared on Sports Illustrated cover. She is constantly hired by numerous fashion houses, and she launched her own underwear line. Success didn’t come because she fit everybody’s standards. No, her success is a result of breaking those old-age standards that should be unacceptable in the 21st century.

These two models are creating a new, better world. A world where people can be happy in their own skin!

We brag that we achieved so much, but have we really evolved? We are willing to accept new technologies, new medicine and all that the 21st century brings us. But we seem unable to accept people for who they are. And that is no way progress.
